ARTEMAS SCROLL
Hooked and Designed by Jane Olson
Rugger's Roundtable  Issue January 1993
The "Artemas Scroll" pattern is a copy of a primitive rug in the historical home of Artemas Ward of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. I had the opportunity of visiting his home and I made a quick drawing of the scroll on a piece of scrap paper. The center has been changed from primitive roses to traditional roses, but the scroll remains the same.

Artemas Ward was a general during the Revolutionary War and was named second in command to General Washington. General Ward's entitlement to first place was sacrificed by the New England statesmen to meet the overwhelming necessity of uniting the colonies.
